The Department of Civil Engineering started its journey in 1977. Ever since the inception, it has been imparting quality education to under graduate students. The Department presently fosters five PG courses. A good number of research scholars are carrying out research in various fields. There are about a dozen laboratories with various research and testing facilities. The faculty consists of eminent specialists from diverse fields and there is commendable research ambience in the Department.

Biographical Sketch : | Dr Aminul Islam Laskar did his BE in Civil Engineering from REC Silchar (presently NIT Silchar). He did his M.Tech in Building Science and Construction Management from IIT Delhi and PhD form IIT Guwahati in the area of Concrete Technology. He has authored 02 books viz. Concrete Technology (to be published shortly by Laxmi Publications (P) limited New Delhi), and Workability and Rheology of fresh Concrete (manuscript has been accepted for publication by Springer-Verlag, Germany). Dr Laskar has also filed for patents for ‘Concrete Rheometer’ (Patent application has already been published by Controller of Patents, Govt of India) and the filing of ‘Improved concrete superplasticizer’ is in process. He has undertaken R&D projects sponsored by DSIR and AICTE. |

Did Master of Engineering in Water Resources Engineering (first position) from Assam Engineering College, Guwahati in 1992. Joined as Lecturer in Applied Mechanics Department of REC Silchar in 1994. Completed Ph.D. from IIT Kharagpur in 2003. Visited Denmark Technical University, Denmark from 01-06-06 to 21-06-06 and participated in a joint Research Project “Experimental investigation of flow around a bottom-seated full sphere or a partially-buried sphere with special emphasis on the bed shear stress”. Biographical Sketch : | Dr. Subhrajit Dutta is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at National Institute of Technology Silchar. He completed his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology Bombay in 2017, where he was a recipient of the MHRD (GoI) scholarship for Graduate study. Subhrajit received his Bachelor of Technology degree in Civil Engineering from National Institute of Technology Silchar in 2010. After his B.Tech, he joined Indian Oil Corporation Limited, Guwahati Refinery, where he served for about 2 years before joining IIT Bombay for his Post-Graduate study. He was working as an Assistant Professor in NIT Meghalaya after his PhD, and joined his position at NIT Silchar in June, 2018. Subhrajit’s research group is currently working on areas like, probabilistic structural mechanics, system reliability/risk analysis, uncertainty quantification, structural optimization under uncertainty, structure & infrastructure resilience, machine/deep learning, risk-based decision making, to mention a few. Subhrajit is the Associate Editor of Practice Periodical on Structural Design and Construction, ASCE and the Guest Editor for ASCE-ASME Journal of Risk and Uncertainty in Engineering Systems, Part A: Civil Engineering. He serves as a reviewer for Reliability Engineering and System Safety; ASCE Journal of Structural Engineering; Structural Engineering and Mechanics; Structures; ASCE-ASME Journal of Risk and Uncertainty in Engineering Systems, Part A: Civil Engineering. He was working as a visiting scholar in the Department of Civil Engineering at Aalto University, Finland during December, 2019 and November-December, 2021. Subhrajit is also an external/invited researcher in the Department of Civil Engineering (Structural Division), Faculty of Engineering, University of Porto, Portugal. |

Biographical Sketch : | Dr. Amit Kumar Das completed Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) in Civil Engineering and Master of Engineering (M.E.) in Geotechnical Engineering from Bengal Engineering and Science University, Shibpur (presently IIEST, Shibpur), Howrah, India in 2004 and 2006, respectively. Then he joined Navi Mumbai SEZ Private Limited (Reliance Group) as Assistant Manager in the department of Engineering Design. After working for three and a half years he left the organization as Manager and joined Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology, Majhitar, Sikkim as Assistant Professor in November, 2009. He completed his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in November, 2017 from the Department of Civil Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, Kharagpur, India as an Institute Research Scholar. Biographical Sketch : | Dr. Ambika Kuity completed her B.Tech in Civil Engineering from Haldia Institute of Technology. After that, she did M.E. from IIEST Shibpur in the specialization of Highway & Traffic Engineering and her thesis work was related to improvisation of strength property of subgrade layer by using laterite soil and prediction model by ANN. In her masters, she Received Silver medal for securing 1st position in M.E. among PG students of Civil Engineering department, IIEST Shibpur. Then she joined IIT Kanpur for pursuing PhD in the area of pavement engineering. She awarded PhD degree on 5th March, 2018. Her PhD dissertation topic was “Studies on the effect of distribution of aggregates on the mechanical response of asphalt mix”. During PhD work, she won 1st prize in Micrography contest (Diminuto’15) held at IIT Kanpur on March, 2015. Also, she was post-doctoral fellow at IIT Bombay and worked in advance pavement laboratory. Before that she acted as guest faculty at IIEST, Shibpur from Jan, 2018 to June, 2018. Also, she acted as reviewer for two international journals and two international conferences. She has 5 SCI journal papers and 8 conference papers from her PhD and Masters work. Her area of research interests is on asphalt mix characterization, microscopic study on asphalt mix, rheological characterization of asphalt binders, reclaimed asphalt pavement material characterization. |
