About The Department of Electronics & Instrumentation Engineering

The department was established in the year 2008 and currently offers a four year B.Tech programme in Electronics & Instrumentation Engineering, and PhD in related research topics. The department admits around 60 students to B.Tech. through Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB) based on the All India Rank obtained through class 12/other Qualifying Examination and Joint Entrance Examination, JEE (Main). Admissions for Foreign Nationals / Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) / Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) are through Direct Admission of Students Abroad (DASA) Scheme. The department selects its PhD scholars through written test and/or interview usually twice a year.

The impact of electronics and instrumentation engineering touches almost every area of today’s life. This department with its state of the art laboratories and young and dynamic faculties is involved in providing quality education and promoting innovative research. The infrastructure and lab facilities are excellent and provides adequate opportunities for students and researchers to learn and innovate. Facilities are available for interdisciplinary research activities in the broad domain of signal processing, biomedical engineering, instrumentation, sensors, embedded systems, robotics, control and automation.

The curriculum is updated regularly in tune with advancement in technology and its applications. The department is actively involved in an MoU with National Instruments for the establishment of Centre of excellence at NIT Silchar.

Knowledge and skills of faculties and staff are regularly updated through well planned and executed development programs. They publish their works in reputed journals and also review and contribute contents for technical journals and books.

In the midst of imparting theoretical and practical subject knowledge department targets the holistic development of students – intellectually, emotionally, psychologically and physically. Trained in a broad-based discipline that has relevance across various industries, our graduates are well-positioned to solve crucial engineering issues and to improve the living conditions of the modern world - making things more efficient, optimal, sustainable and affordable.

Programme Educational Objectives (PEOs) of the Electronics & Instrumentation Engineering

The objectives of the B. Tech in Electronics & Instrumentation Engineering program of National Institute of Technology Silchar are-

  1. Deliver comprehensive education in Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering to ensure that the graduates have the core competency to be successful in industry or excel in higher studies in any of the following fields: Industrial Process engineering, Microelectronics and VLSI Design, Signal Processing, Communication Engg., Automation and Control, and Biomedical Instrumentation.
  2. Provide students foundation in mathematical and engineering fundamentals required to solve engineering design problems and also to pursue research.
  3. Train students to work as teams to comprehend, analyze, design, and create innovative solutions to real life problems.
  4. Inculcate a sense of ethics, professionalism, and effective communication skills amongst graduates.
  5. Provide an academic environment that gives adequate opportunity to the students to cultivate lifelong skills needed for a successful professional career.
Programme Outcomes (POs) of the Electronics & Instrumentation Engineering

  1. Graduates will be able to apply knowledge of basic sciences and engineering in the solution of electronics and instrumentation engineering problems.
  2. Graduates will demonstrate an ability to identify, formulate, analyze and solve electronics and instrumentation engineering problems.
  3. Graduates will demonstrate an ability to design electronic circuits, conduct experiments, analyze and interpret the resulting data.
  4. Graduates will demonstrate an ability to design a system, component or algorithms to meet desired needs within the context of electronics and communication engineering and considering realistic constraints.
  5. Graduates will demonstrate an ability to visualize and work on multi-disciplinary laboratories.
  6. Graduates should be able to design optimal systems / processes using their core technical skills, considering economic, environmental, social, ethical, health, safety and sustainability constraints.
  7. Graduate will demonstrate skills to use modern engineering tools, software and equipment to analyze problems.
  8. Graduates will have an understanding of professional and ethical responsibilities
  9. Graduates will have effective communication skills.
  10. Graduate will show the understanding of impact of engineering solutions on the society, environment and awareness of contemporary issues.
  11. Graduates will develop confidence for self-education and ability for life-long learning.
  12. Graduates will be competent to participate and succeed in competitive examinations.

Presently the department utilizes the rich, modernized and related laboratories available in the institute under different branches (majority from Electrical Engg). The laboratories include:

These labs will be very useful for high quality laboratory experiments and research activities. The department is expected to have a strong link with industries.

At the same time, the Department aims to create excellent educational resources and an excellent educational environment through frontline research opportunities.
