The workshops of the Department contain highly sophisticated machines presenting a unique and unparalleled quality. Various research & development activities undertaken by the Department put the students on busy schedules enabling them to blend to the modern industry requirements.


Vision of the Department of Mechanical Engineering

The vision of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, National Institute of Technology Silchar is as follows:

  1. To envisage an ambience of excellence, inspiring value based education, research and development in Mechanical Engineering with a commitment to train students with world-class competency and cutting-edge proficiency to face challenges of global market with confidence;
  2. To create, disseminate and apply the state-of-the-art technologies and practices to societal problems.
  3. To build top of the line faculty through appropriate human resource policies and to create effective interface with industries, business and community to make education responsive to changes.

  3. To promote a cosmopolitan outlook among the students and faculty and to develop a sense of national integration.
Program Educational Objectives (PEOs) of the Department of Mechanical Engineering

The objectives of the B.Tech. in Mechanical Engineering programme of National Institute of Technology Silchar are as follows:

  1. To deliver comprehensive education in Mechanical Engineering to ensure that the graduates attain the core competency to be successful in industry or excel in higher studies in any of the following fields: Thermal Engineering, Mechanical Design, and Manufacturing Science and Technology.
  2. To provide the students with foundation in mathematical and engineering fundamentals required to solve engineering problems and also to pursue higher studies and research.
  3. To train the students to work as teams to comprehend, analyze, design and create innovative solutions of real life problems.
  4. To inculcate a sense of ethics, professionalism and effective communication skills amongst graduates.
  5. To provide an academic environment that gives adequate opportunity to the students to cultivate lifelong skills needed for a successful professional career.
Program Outcomes (POs) of the Department of Mechanical Engineering

Program Outcomes (POs) of the B. Tech. in Mechanical Engineering are as follows:

  1. Graduates will be able to apply knowledge of mathematics, science and engineering in the solution of Mechanical Engineering problems.
  2. Graduates will demonstrate an ability to identify, formulate, analyze and solve Mechanical Engineering problems.
  3. Graduates will demonstrate ability to design mechanical systems, conduct experiments, analyze and interpret the resulting data.
  4. Graduates will demonstrate an ability to design a system, component to meet desired needs within the context of Mechanical Engineering and considering realistic constraints.
  5. Graduates will demonstrate an ability to visualize and work on laboratory and multidisciplinary task.
  6. Graduate will demonstrate skills to use modern engineering tools, software and equipment to analyze problems.
  7. Graduates will have an understanding of professional and ethical responsibilities.

Academics


The Mechanical Department has an active Society called "mech Society" which has been formed with a view to promote various technical activities among the students. Both the faculty and the students are the members of the Society.

Mechanical Enigineering Workshop


The Workshop under the Department of Mechanical Engineering consists of 4 (four) Nos. of shops presently. They are –

  1. Machine Shop:
    • There are various types of Lathe machines, Milling machine, Grinding machine, Drilling machine, Shapper machine etc. In order to fulfil the various operational involvement as per B.Tech Syllabus of the Institute. Under supervision of Technical Assistant, SG-II two technician and one attendent are working.
  2. Welding Shop:
    • Welding shop consists of Arc Welding machines, Gas Welding equipments, submerged Arc Welding etc.Under supervision of Technical Assistant, SG-II two technician and one attendent are working.
  3. Carpentry Shop:
    • Various types of wood working machines like, Surface planner machine, Thickness planner machine, Circular Saw machine, Wood working Lathe etc and also various types of wood working tools available in Carpentry Shop.Under supervision of Technical Assistant, SG-II two technician and one attendent are working.
  4. Welding Shop:
    • Various types of measuring and marking instruments, drill machine and various types of vices are available in Fitting Shop.Under supervision of Technical Assistant, SG-II two technician and one attendent are working.
