Mission of the Department of Mechanical Engineering

The mission of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, National Institute of Technology Silchar is as follows:

  1. To impart instruction, training and awareness to students to meet the technological and socio-economical needs of the country;
  2. To benchmark the Mechanical Engineering Department with the best in the country;
  3. To promote a cosmopolitan outlook among the students and faculty and to develop a sense of national integration.
Program Educational Objectives (PEOs) of the Department of Mechanical Engineering

The objectives of the B.Tech. in Mechanical Engineering programme of National Institute of Technology Silchar are as follows:

  1. To deliver comprehensive education in Mechanical Engineering to ensure that the graduates attain the core competency to be successful in industry or excel in higher studies in any of the following fields: Thermal Engineering, Mechanical Design, and Manufacturing Science and Technology.
  2. To provide the students with foundation in mathematical and engineering fundamentals required to solve engineering problems and also to pursue higher studies and research.
  3. To train the students to work as teams to comprehend, analyze, design and create innovative solutions of real life problems.
  4. To inculcate a sense of ethics, professionalism and effective communication skills amongst graduates.
  5. To provide an academic environment that gives adequate opportunity to the students to cultivate lifelong skills needed for a successful professional career.

Program Outcomes (POs) of the B. Tech. in Mechanical Engineering are as follows:

  1. Graduates will be able to apply knowledge of mathematics, science and engineering in the solution of Mechanical Engineering problems.
  2. Graduates will demonstrate an ability to identify, formulate, analyze and solve Mechanical Engineering problems.
  3. Graduates will demonstrate ability to design mechanical systems, conduct experiments, analyze and interpret the resulting data.
  4. Graduates will demonstrate an ability to design a system, component to meet desired needs within the context of Mechanical Engineering and considering realistic constraints.

UG

  • The institute was established in 1967 as Regional Engineering College Silchar and academic activities started from 2nd November 1977 with Mechanical Engineering as one of the Departments.
  • Intake of First Batch of UG was 15 and was awarded the B.E. degree in 1982-83 under Gauhati University.
  • The affiliation was shifted to Assam Universityin 1994.
  • In 2002 REC Silchar was converted into NIT Silchar, an Institute of National Importance, and since then the institute has been awarding B. Tech. degree.
  • Started with 15 seats in 1977.

  • Successfully organized 03 editions of International Conference on Recent Advancements in Mechanical Engineering (ICRAME) in 2020 2021 & 2022, respectively and 4th edition is scheduled on February 2023.
